the working guts

My computer’s hard drive (a new one, replaced less than a month ago) took a dive, again. This time it was a complete loss - no backup earlier than one month past. So, it will be a few days before a longer update, and if you’ve emailed me in the past month, there is a good chance your email has gone to the ether.

More soon…

we are experiencing technical difficulties

Apologies for the delay in writing, my computer’s hardrive decided to spin itself into little metal bits. Well, not quite that severe, but I’ve put a number of hours into recovering my files and getting my laptop back up and running.

Updates soon, but I need a break from my irksome computer lest I throw it against a wall in frustration.

web work; again

Okay, had a few moments today, while still stuck in McMurdo (updates on that in a moment). The gist is that I’ve updated the site a touch, set an opening page on www.noblehobo.com (which you may have seen), and arranged my blog bits and bobs into two separate sites. From now on, I’ll be tossing Antarctic updates on a blog specific to that (particularly for younger folk reading). The random commentary on life and such will continue to reside here, on this one.

You can catch the link to the Antarctic blog on the front page, or just go to www.noblehobo.com/antarctica.

Please be patient, I’ll only have intermittent opportunities to update and finish fixing the world behind the page.

Many thanks.

Update

Seems there’s more work involved than I first thought - several hours to get it back to where it once was. I’ll get there, but it’ll take time. In the mean, entries will be here.

commenting on the comment engine

On a note of the underpinnings of this site, I played with the comment engine some. There should no longer be a need to authenticate through a third party application, though I might still have to approve you first. In other words, comment away (by clicking on the comments button after each entry, adding your name, your comment, and waiting a day or two for me to approve the comment and avoid the spam problem from last year).

dusty

a realization struck me tonight, as i pack to travel for work…

…there’s dust on my stuff.

it’s been a long time since i’ve sat still long enough for that to happen.

technical tidbits

so this site is up and running in a sort of fashion - a car frame on blocks with a running engine, maybe. there’s definitely a lot more work to do - major, minor and cosmetic but she runs for now. comments work too - save a catch. you need to log in to a “type key account” put together by the company i purchased the software for this site from. it’s an extra pain in the process but should keep spam from occuring. besides, all of you reading this find me worth it for an extra second of time, right? [insert sarcastic comment here]

to sign up for the service just click on the “comments” button. when the comments page comes up you’ll see a bit saying that you are not signed in and that you must click to sign in. click there - it says, “sign in”.

you’ll be taken to a new page. in the center will be a button that says “create a free account”. click it. you’ll have to fill in a brief bit of info, pick a log in and password, and then confirm through email (so use an email address you can actually check). you’ll get an email from typekey asking you to click on a web location for final conformation (this is after you filled out the form and submitted it) and that should do it.

after i approve you. [insert evil laughter here]

if this sounds confusing, don’t fret, it’s much easier to follow and understand if you click the buttons. and email me if you have any questions.

happy typing in the mean…

it...it's alive!

‘bout time…this lovely little thing is starting to run again. i finally managed to get the program that runs this blog to work correctly after a ‘forced’ upgrade by my host provider. it’s a long messy story of technical glitches and severe procrastination but things should be working now. at least mechanically. as for the look, well, i’m just on the default template at the moment.

frankly, i think that this looks ugly as all get out. even though i’m not pursuing design at the moment i have to say that i’m hopelessly attached to how certain things look. so it’s ugly. and that will change (probably back to what it used to be) but that requires me to peel a heep of programming code (css and html hell) out of the recesses of my mind. the content is here, the look is not. the speed it changes at will probably directly correlate to how annoyed i am by the look of this thing.

alas, i ramble. it works. i can write and you can now write back. rock on with our bad selves. oh, one more thing though - i won’t be leaving the comments open on entries for long. too much more than a week and the spam bots manage to find them. being that i hate this thing filled with adverts for cialis, porn, and nigerian identity-theft schemes i’ll be closeing the comments after about a week or two. still - that should be enough time to ask back hard questions or tell me if i’ve gone off of the deep end. anywho, here we go!
